AIDS in Cats: What are the Symptoms of Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV)?

FIV has become a common disease among cats. This virus disables the immune system of cats, making them vulnerable to diseases. So, what are the symptoms of Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) and how can you recognize if your cat has the virus?

What is FIV and how does it progress?

FIV is an insidious and slowly progressing disease. The virus settles in the cat's lymph nodes and multiplies there. At this stage, the lymph nodes enlarge. In the first stage of the disease, it is important to check the cat's lymph nodes. If slight enlargements are noticed, you can diagnose this disease early. If the lymph nodes are significantly enlarged, the FIV virus has multiplied too much.

Progressive Symptoms of FIV

Following enlargement of the lymph nodes, cats infected with FIV may develop the following symptoms

  • Loss of appetite

  • Weight loss

  • Diarrhea

  • High fever

These symptoms indicate that the cat's immune system is slowly failing. White blood cells and lymphocytes begin to decline, indicating that something is wrong with the immune system.

Influence of External Agents and Skin Lesions

Cats with a collapsed immune system become vulnerable to external factors. In this case, lesions begin to appear in the mouth and nose. These lesions may not even respond to long-term treatment. Ears become dirty, signs of itching become more pronounced, and the coat becomes less shiny. Changes also occur in the teeth and gums.

Effects on the digestive and respiratory system

Cats may not be able to eat food because of the lesions and this can lead to bad breath. Problems such as breathing difficulties and runny nose also occur.

Nervous System Effects and Anemia

As FIV progresses, the cat's nervous system begins to suffer. There are marked changes in the character of the cat and discoloration of the cornea of the eye. Cats suffering from this virus also often show signs of anemia.

Other Effects of FIV

FIV can cause pregnant cats to miscarry. Furthermore, cats under the influence of FIV are predisposed to cancer and their immune systems lose the strength to fight it.

FIV is a virus that poses a serious threat to cats and weakens their immune system. If you notice any of the above symptoms in your cat, it is important to contact a veterinarian immediately. Early detection and proper treatment can improve your cat's quality of life and slow the progression of the disease. To protect your cats from FIV, do not neglect regular veterinary check-ups and talk to your vet about FIV vaccination if necessary.
