Can Cats Taste Sweet?

Can Cats Perceive Sweet

One of the highlights of the special bond between cats and humans is our willingness to help our cats with food. Usually, we want to offer our cats our own favorite foods. Because of our close relationship with cats, it's natural to think that they taste the same as we do. However, the reality is quite different. Cats can't taste every taste that humans can. In fact, they can't perceive some flavors at all. So, what do cats like to eat?

When it comes to food, cats like meat the most. This is closely related to their predatory nature. But there's another reason why they like meat: Cats, unlike other mammals, can't taste sweets.

Can Cats Taste Sweet?

Why cats can't detect sweet? One of the genes important in taste perception is the “Tas1r2” gene. This gene is found especially in humans and herbivores. However, it is not found in cats. Cats that do not have the “Tas1r2” gene cannot perceive sweet. This is why cats do not distinguish between sugar water and normal water.

The inability of cats to perceive sweet tastes is also in line with their predatory nature and dietary habits. Since sweet foods are not naturally present in their diet, this taste perception has become evolutionarily redundant. Cats prefer protein-rich foods because they fulfill their energy and nutritional needs.

As a result, cats' inability to perceive sweet is consistent with their dietary habits and evolutionary history. As humans, instead of giving our cats sweet treats, it would be better for us to offer them foods that fit their natural diet. Providing our cats with appropriate food for their health will help them live a long and happy life.
